Data sources
Breaking Wind shows public marine data from government services. None of them makes, endorses or checks this app, and none of this data is for navigation.
United States
- Tides and currents: NOAA Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) predictions.
- Measured water levels: the same NOAA service, from the nearest gauge within 20 nm. They're compared with that gauge's own prediction.
- Route planning: NOAA's elevation model for land and depth, and NOAA's electronic navigational charts for rocks, wrecks and obstructions.
- Wind, rain and temperature: National Weather Service forecasts.
- Waves and water temperature: NOAA National Data Buoy Center observations.
- Depth and bathymetry: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information elevation models. These are not charts.
- Charted hazards: NOAA Office of Coast Survey electronic navigational chart data.
Canada
Forecasts only. Data Source: Environment and Climate Change Canada. Over parts of the Great Lakes, this also supplies the forecast where the National Weather Service has none, and the app credits it there. Canadian tides, currents and charts aren't included.
The map
The base map is Apple Maps. It isn't a nautical chart.

These come from other boaters, not from any of the services above. Read safety and liability before relying on anything in the app.
