Tutorials
New here? The tutorials walk through the map, routes, anchor math, fleets, marks and the heads-up view.
Routes and anchoring
Why did my route go a different way than I wanted?
It finds the shortest way that keeps clear of land, shallow water and charted hazards. To change it, hold a point or the line, drag it where you'd rather go, then tap Recalculate. See Plan and follow a route.
It says it couldn't find a clear way through.
A start, end or moved point is probably well inland or cut off by shallow water. Move it onto open water and try again. You can also lower your minimum depth on your profile, if that's right for your boat.
Can I trust a planned route?
Not on its own. It's a planning aid built from public data. Check every leg against an official chart before you go.
How is the arrival time worked out?
Distance divided by your cruising speed, which you set in Settings. Once you're following a route and moving, it uses your GPS speed. It doesn't account for current or wind.
How does anchor math work out the chain?
The deepest water during your stay, plus your bow roller height, times the scope you choose. See Anchor math.
Getting started
Do I need an account?
Yes. Sign in with Apple or Google to use the app; there are no passwords.
Why doesn't my device show my position?
Wi-Fi iPads have no GPS chip, so on the water they may have no usable position. A cellular iPad has one built in, or you can connect an external GPS receiver. Check that location permission is on for Breaking Wind in your device's Settings too.
Does it work without a connection?
Not fully, in this version. Conditions, marks, alerts and fleets all need a data connection, and the app tells you when something can't be reached. Anything you post or send out of coverage waits and goes out when you're back.
A number looks wrong or is missing.
Every number says where it came from and how far away it was measured, so check that first: the nearest station may be some distance off. The data comes from public services that can be late or unavailable. Trust your official charts and your own eyes over the app, and tell us if something seems consistently off.
What does it cover in Canada?
Forecasts only (Data Source: Environment and Climate Change Canada). Canadian tides, currents and charts aren't included.
Fleets
How do I start or join a fleet?
Open Fleet in the app. To start one, give it a name, then open Boats and share the invite code. To join one, enter the code you were sent.
My message says "Not delivered yet".
It hasn't reached our server, usually because you're out of coverage. The app keeps trying, and it'll go out when you're back. Never rely on fleet chat in an emergency.
A boat on the map has gone gray.
We haven't heard from that boat for over five minutes, so it may no longer be where it's drawn. Its row in Boats says when it was last heard from.
Your location and your posts
Who can see my trips?
Only you. Trips never appear on the profile other people see.
When does my post go public?
Right away. Every post is public as soon as you post it, including where you dropped it.
How do I stop sharing with a fleet?
Turn off Share my numbers for that fleet, and your boat leaves everyone's map.
Can anyone read fleet messages?
The people they're sent to can. Fleet messages aren't end-to-end encrypted, so they're also readable on our server. The privacy policy has the details.
Your account
How do I export my data?
In the app, go to You, then Settings, then export your data.
How do I delete my account?
In the app, go to You, then Settings, then delete your account. You don't need to write to us. It's deleted right away and can't be undone. More about deleting your account.
Your subscription
Subscriptions are bought and billed through Apple. The app shows the price before you buy.
How do I cancel?
In your device's Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Deleting the app or your account doesn't cancel it by itself.
How do I restore a purchase?
Use Restore purchases on the subscription screen in the app, signed in to the same Apple account.
How do I get a refund?
Apple handles refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
What happens to my data if I cancel?
You keep it, and export still works.
Report a problem
To report a post, comment, person or fleet chat, use Report in the app. You can also block a person, which applies everywhere. We review reports within 24 hours. If you can't get to the app, write to support@breakingwind.app.
